Alcalá, 15 km from Seville
The beginnings of Alcalá de Guadaíra, can be seen in the hillside which is crowned by its Mediaeval Castle, from the final quarter of the 13th century in the events which followed the conquest of the fort by Christian troops led by King Fernando III.
Alcalá, at the extreme of the cornice of los Alcores and located JUST 15KM FROM SEVILLE CITY, combines all the natural, scenic and geological excellence of the region of Bajo Guadalquivir, a priveleged territory favourable to human settlement since prehistoric periods. There are remains of human presence here, be they in the archaeological sites of the Palace of Gandul or in the previously mentioned castle on the hillside, both dating in various stages from the Paeleolithic, Iberian, Roman or Islamic ages. Nevertheless, this continuity only dates from the distribution of territory following the Christian conquest at the end of the 13th century.
Alcalá de Guadaíra has a ver large municipal district with a great geographical diversity in three distinct units, the hill (first location of the urban centre), the open country and lowlands (to the east of the current urban centre) and the terraces (to the north of the municipal district), which gave it great possibilities for the development of animal and human life with a benign climate, fertile soil and an abundance of water.
The river and the human being throughout history have shaped a cultural and natural heritage here which makes Alcal a must visit for anyone in the province. The most striking elements of this legacy are the Mediaeval Castle and the walls , of mediaeval origin with eleven towers;
El Gandul Area, located outside the city, is considered together with the castle as one of the most important elements of the historical legacy of the city. The area includes the Castle of Marchenilla; the Necropolis of Gandul, which has been declared a National Monument; and the Palace of Gandul.
Other elements of interest are the Bridge of Carlos III, the granary known as the Casa del Pósito, the Church of Santiago, the Church of San Sebastián, the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Águila and the Hermitage of San Roque.
Also worthy of mention are the Windmills of Guadaira , located mainly along the bed of the River Guadaíra, although there are less important ones close to springs. The windmills date from the Islamic and lower Mediaeval epochs, the mejority of them being renovated in the 18th century.
Located in the enclave of Oromana, the Pine Tree Park of Oromana is about one kilometre long, running parallel to the banks of the river Guadaíra. It has picnic spots, pergolas and rich vegetation of diverse native species, and also hiking trails which make the area a naturally priveleged space for the recreation of its visitors.
It also has quays which in years gone by were used for picturesque boat trips along the Guadaíra, going past the typical windmills and watermills which gave Alcala the name of Alcala of the Bakers. The Nature Park, the campsite and the Hotel of the Pine Trees make Oromano and its surroundings and its range of recreation offered into one of the more unique of the metropolitan surroundings.
There are many different activities which can be paractised in this city, from the trails to the castle and the Oroman park, but the one which stands out is golf in the Royal Golf Club of Seville, or paintballing in the Alcala coutryside 10 minutes away (next to the campsite) replete with natural and artifical obstacles, where paintballing requires your best strategies.
