Segovia, World Heritage SiteFrom spain.info. Segovia in the region of http://www.spainonline.com/en/castillaleon/' target='_blank'>Castilla and Leon and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located on elevated terrain between the sources of the Rivers Eresma and Clamores. If this location is known for something, it is its historic centre, and, if not that, the famous Aquaduct of Segovia. This jewel of engineering, constructed under the rule of Imperial Rome in the 1st century, transported water to this high altitude town from 15 kilometres away. Its 163 arches and 29 metre height at its highest point are supported by masonry stones from the Sierra de Guadarrama without mortar or lead. In addition to the famous aquaduct, there are a multitude of mediaeval churches, a cathedral and a palace constituting majestic scenery which dominates these Castilian lands. Segovia is also an excellent starting point for touring the province and visiting the Palace of La Granja or the Nature Park of las Hoces del Río Duratón, among other options. Any point in the province is a good location to taste Segovian cooking. There are the butter beans of La Granja, Castillian soup (from garlic and bread), roast pork and lamb, and it culminates with stew and dishes related to hunting. The chorizo of Cantimpalo is of merited fame, as is the Segovian Punch. The wines with Guarantee of Origin of Ribera del Duero can accompany these delicacies. |

Trails in the ProvinceThe Province of Segovia has diverse trails to get to know its history, art and culture. The Palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, the Interactive Nature Centre of Valsaín and the palace and woods are some of the sites of interest on the Royal Sites Trail. The Mudejar Trail makes contact with this singular artistic style in locations such as Santa María la Real de la Nieva, Coca or Cuellar. Other major attractions in Segovia are the Castles Trail, in which, in addition to the defensive architecture of Turégano and Castilnovo , we can visit locations with a strong mediaeval flavour such as Fuentepelayo and Sepúlveda. The Nature Park of las Hoces del Río Duratón and its Church of Santiago demonstrate exceptional scenery. To view popular architecture more closely there is nothing better than the Mountain Villages Trail, which takes us to Sotosalbos, Pedraza and Riaza. |
