Beaches of Barbate, CÁDIZ

Barbate offers 25 kilometres of coastline of exceptional quality with beaches of distinct characteristics and uses. The scenery is memorable for the blue of the coast and the green of the Nature Park of Cliffs and Pine forests which form a great mass of forest circling the urban centre and flow into the sea opposite the popular Tajo Cliffs, which are at an altitude of 100 metres.

The beaches of the municipal district include those of the urban centres such as Zahora, Caños de Meca and Zahara de los Atunes, and they are:

Beaches of the town of Barbate: (At www.barbate.net)

- Hierbabuena Beach: A slightly wild beach in the extreme south of the cliffs of Barbate which extends to the village’s port.
It is 900 metres long, has fine golden sands and also dune formations covered in vegetation and pine trees. It is also the continuation of Breña Nature Park and has marvellous scenery.

To the north is a high cliff, where the remains of quarries and water deposits can be found, next to it is a path which ascends to the Rock of Tajo. It is solely used by campers as it offers neither beach nor catering facilities. It is accessible from Barbate via the main road to los Caños de Meca.

- Carmen Beach: This beach extends from the port of Barbate along the lenngth of its urban centre und further on to the mouth of the river and the marshes. It is an urban beach with a promenade and is very spacious.

It has fine golden sand, and is often hit by strong winds which attracts those who wish to windsurf.

- Cañitos Beach: This is a large sandy beach which stretches from the river marshes to Pajares beach, which is close to Zahara. It is 9 kilometres long and is the largest in the area. At its base the Retín Mountain can be found, extending from the sea to a rich flat grassy surface for livestock. This is a slightly wild, unguarded beach and is alos next to a miltary zone which means that access is partially restricted. It is accessible via the main road from Barbate to Zahara.

- Pajares Beach: This beach continues on from Cañitos Beach and is characterized by its being closer to Retín Mountain which reaches some 300 metres of altitude.
Without the usual white sands and having abundant rocks it is ideal for windsurfing. Its southern tip always looks to be flooded with the stagnant waters of the Zarzuela stream.
