More than five hundred years of the Moors’ lifestyle and architecture has made this town, with its backcloth hill of six hundred feet, one of the most beautiful in the province. It's located at only some 15 minutes from the marvelous beaches of the Costa de la Luz.

Vejer, like an alert lookout over the beach of El Palmar, rises through a labyrinth of narrow and steep streets, with white shuttered houses which conceal the surprises of their beautiful and hidden patios, as well as the privacy of the “las cobijadas”, the Vejerian women who have reached the 21st century with their faces covered, in the same manner as their sisters of Xauen and Tetuan before they left Vejer in the 15th century.

Vejer has managed to integrate successfully several countryside uses, including some of high ecological value, like Santa Lucia, an experimental farm, declared a national monument, due to its special watering system which dates from Roman times.
Also outstanding are the Park of Acantilado y Pinar de Barbete; the country house of Las Lomas, and the surroundings of Lake Janda which has exceptional ornithogical value.

El Palmar beach which stretches for four miles has been preserved in its natural state. It has exceptionally fine white sand and crystal clear waters, which are excellent for fishing, surfing and windsurfing.

As well as water sports, Vejer has the advantage of a hill which serves as a take-off site for hang-gliders and delta wing flyers. There are good facilities in the countrypark for walkers and hikers as well as for horse riders. Golf can be played at the Dehesa de Montemedio course (18 holes par 72, 5,896m).

Our tour around the town followed the advice of the local tourist office and started in the Pasio de Corredera, passing by the Puerta de Sancho IV, Casa del Mayorzgo and the Torre del Homenaje, the Arco de la Villa, plaza “de los pescaitos” (plaza de España), Castillo and the Barrio de la Juderia (the Jewish quarter) and finishing at the parish church of Divino Salvador and the Puerta de la Segur.

However, one should not miss out the windmills next to the Jewish Quarter, Santuary de la Oliva, Walled Precinct (city symbol), four City Gates, El Palmar beach and Nmac – a special piece of contemporary art in the countryside of Dehesa de Montenmedio.

Castillo de Vejer

Anytime is a good time to wander in the narrow streets and to sample the excellent tapas, especially in places like Janda en la Bodeguita (Marques de Tamaron 9) or in the Barca de Vejer (Sacrista, Bodegas Gallardo.

During the summer the areas around El Palmar beach are the favourite places of young people drawn to the open air bars (chiringuitos), clothes shops and restaurants.

One of the most important days for local people is Easter Sunday (also called the fiesta de Toro Embolao), which, after the solemn days of the preceding week, the town gives itself over to party time in the crowded streets. Festivities come to a climax the following morning with the running of the bulls.

Other important festivals include: Carnivales (February), Easter Week, Spring Festivals (April-May with processions of coaches and veiled women), Romeria de Nuestra Señora de la Oliva (7 May) and the Quema de Ruanillos y Toro de fuego (June).
