Fuenteheridos

Fuenteheridos is a village with charm enclaved in a mountainous area inside the Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche, whose name originates from the Leonese Fonte, spring, and Ferido, the source of the irrigation. One of the most curious explanations for the name is that during the battles of the reconquest the casualties were cared for with water from the Fuente de los Doce Cańos.

With its priveleged climate and ancestral scenery which is exceptionally well preserved this region has been since long ago a place for retreat and meditation. Nowadays the mountains receive many visitors who are looking for tranquility and progressively increasingly are interested in the rich nature and culture as well as its top quality gastronomy, especially with its meats, hams and delicious indigenous dishes.

The scenery created by the chestnut tree attracted by the golden shades which are substituted by green shades create the most photogenic views against the light of the year. In fact, in Fuenteheridos, where scents and colours live together in harmony, the visitor feels at one with nature.

This is why it is an ideal area for lovers of active tourism where you can do things such as hiking, horse riding, photographic trails, mushroom picking, observing the flora and fauna and many other activities.

Fuenteheridos is one of the best conserved mountain villages in the area, which has, for its rich architectural heritage, been declared a Historic-Artistic Site . As its principal religious building the Parish Church of Espķritu Santo stands out with its precious 17th century tower.

Moreover water is the vital element of Fuenteheridos. Its famous Fuente de los Doce Cańos, which is found in the Plaza Coso in the centre of town is the source of the River Mśrtigas, and more than two million litres of water flows here daily, supplying the town and allowing it to take advantage of the irrigation.

Other visits of interest include the Gardens of Villaonuba, where mountain species are represented in a marvellous botanical garden; the Plaza del Coso, where in addition to the previously mentioned fountain of the twelve pipes there is an impressive and good-looking marble cross made in 1792;

the Mirador Era de la Carrera, ideal for taking in views of the village; or the Verónica, one of the few representations of the Crucifixion oin Andalucia, which is located outside the village.

Regarding festivals of interest, the stand out ones are: Easter, the Quema de los judas (Easter Saturday), the Fiesta del Patrón (7 days before Corpus), the Virgen de la Fuente (15th of August), la Pilgrimage of the Reina de los Įngeles (8 September), the Fiesta de la Castańa (first week of December).
