Introduction Its priveleged location between the scenery of the Nature Park of Sierra Bemeja and 21 kilometres of coast make Estepona an important holiday destination. It also has, outside of the location itself, a range of special leisure attractions such as the nature reserve of Selwo, the equestrian school of “Costa del Sol”, the congress centre and the leisure harbour. The majority of Estepona’s area is covered by the mountainous scenery of Sierra Bermeja and the foothills which run down to the coast in the form of large hills.History The oldest human remains found in Estepona date from the Copper and Bronze Ages. Amongst the numerous Phoenician and Roman settlementsthe ruins at the mouth of the River Guadalmansa stand out, which could be from the Roman district of Saldaba. The Arabs founded the town of Esstebbuna, which was the origins for present day Estepona.Monuments![]() The most striking monument of the area is the Church of Virgen de los Remedios from the 18th century. The church tower can be seen from any part of the town. Other striking monuments are the Torre del Reloj; the ruins of the walls of Nicio Castle, which are located in the raised part of the Padrón area; San Luis Castle; various stately homes, and the Casa Borrega, dating from the 18th century. There are also sites in Estepona from earlier eras such as Torres (a Roman village) and the Parque Antena.![]() Finally along the coastal seafront there is a collection of watchtowers erected between the end of the 15th and the start of the 16th centuries. They are Arroyo Vaquero, de Baños, del Padrón and del Verín. The Port The port of Estepona, located only 5 minutes from the town centre offers a lovely mix of an urban area with a definite seaside air which allows for strolls through the place which will be a real pleasure, between the scent of the sea, the marvellous view of the people and boats on the beach, and the coming and going of relaxed passers-by seeking a well-earned rest which they may well find in one of the numerous magnificent restaurants located here. |
