(Photos and text from Turismo de Castellón) Castellon is located on the Spanish Meditarranean coast, the most northerly of the provinces of the Community of Valencia. Castellon, and its Costa del Azahar, is a land of great contrasts. Costa del Azahar Going from north to south, Vinaròs is the first city to salute the visitors to the "Costa Azahar"; Vinaros has a modern bullring, a commercial and fishing port, large and clean beaches with all necessary services and a rich gastronomy in which the king prawn is the most valued and traditional species.Benicarló is a city of Arab origin, with pre-Iberian centres nearby. It has a mediaeval urban centre with noteworthy homes where you can see noble coats of arms on the facades. Going along a long avenue, it is united with the sea where the stand-out elements are the fishing port and the large beach which leads to the unique Peñíscola. Peñíscola is not just unique because of its location on a rocky promontory surrounded by the sea and linked to the land by a sandy isthmus, but also its exceptional monuments, the historical events which created its scenery and the beauty of its beaches and the enormous cliffs of Sierra de Irta, a nature area of great beauty. The majestic Castle of Peñíscola was constructed by Templars in the 13th century. It is nowadays, the most visited tourist city in all of the Community of Valencia. A little further south we find Alcossebre, an eminently tourist urban centre of Arab origin where fishermen populated the area. It is part of Alcalà de Xivert and has a modern leisure harbour, beaches and magnificent developments of chalets and apartments. In Torreblanca there is the maritime village of Torrenostra, with an excellent beach, campsites and restaurants surrounded by an old fishing village which can now be found in constant development as a tourist and summer centre. Between this village and that of Oropesa del Mar, which occupies parrt of the municipal district of Cabanes, there is the Nature Park of the Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca, an important humid zone where valuable vegetation and animal species are conserved. In Oropesa del Mar the beaches of La Concha and de Morro de Gos are located, both of mild sand. Next to them is a modern leisure harbour which opens up excellent perspectives for tourism in this area. Also is Oropesa del Mar with rough and beautiful coves covered with pines and a vast view over the Mediterranean, where is highlighted the area of "Las Playetas". Benicàssim, a village of Arab origin, is a cradle of tourism if Costa Azahar, not only for its magnificent beaches but also its rough mountains that are very close to the coast, forming the Desierto de las Palmas. The proximity between ocean and mountains may seem to fog the horizon between them. With the spectacular development of the town and the apartments near the sea, Benicàssim has converted into a one the most important the tourist destinations of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. |
