Anyone wishing to get to know quintessential Andalucia has, in the form of the town of Antequera, a compulsory visit. And in the outskirts of the town you can view the spectacular scenery of the Sierra del Torcal, the largest karstic mountain mass on the planet.

Being 45 kilometres from Málaga and having more than 40,000 inhabitants, this has been a nerve centre since remote times.

Antequera still has valuable remains which show the importance it once had during the centuries as a priveleged settlement in Andalucia.

The 3 Dolomite districts which still exist (the most important ones in Europe) are: El Romeral, Viera, and above all, Menga which is the oldest, are the evidence that in prehistoric times this was a monumental and mythical place.

But, as you move through time, you can see that roman Antikaria did not diminish in importance and that, actually, it is possible to admire in the Municipal Museum (situated in the Palace of Nájera) the Ephebo, one of the most accomplished examples of roman sculpture in all of Spain.

Its prestige did not diminish during Arab times and in the centuries following it gained theAlcazaba, and the superb Tower of Homage, from whose watchtower you could see the urban scenery of the
town.

In the old town of Antequera you can find the Royal Colegiata de Santa María la Mayor, a Renaissance building with a harmonica facade evocative of Roman architecture. If you go deep into the lowest parts you will find Baroque churches and palaces.

But Antequera also lays over scenes of natural beauty and active tourism, with splendid places such as the Fuente de Piedra lake, the Source of the river Villa, the Grief of the Loversor the Nature Location of the Torcal, an impressive group of limestone rocks affected by erosion and the passsage of time which are unique and beautiful formations.

Its scenery is sleepy yet surreal which surprises the visitor who ventures into the routes marked out throughout the area, where the imagination can lead you to see distinct models and figures in the stone.

Also, apart from trekking, it is also possible to go rock climbing and potholing in the Rasca cave.

The festival calendar of Antequera reaches its zenith during Easter, and Spring Festival (May)is equally attractive with its Andalucian stalls and its agricultural and livestock markets where fans of bullfighting can be delighted by important fights where some of the most important figures in bullfighting nationally will take part. The Royal Fair of August and the Day of the Lady (December) also stand out.

Eating well and culinary craftsmanship are attractive complementary factors to vising Antequera where you will purchase high quality products every time. Its cuisine is of such quality that the town has given its name to two much loved meals: the Antequeran Fritter and the famous Antequeran Bread Rolls .
